Hawksmoor School

EYFS

At Hawksmoor we aim for our EYFS pupil’s first experience of school to be a positive and happy one; that provides them not only with the skills needed for KS1 and KS2, but with an enjoyment and thirst for learning.

Our Early Years curriculum centres around the four overarching principles of the EYFS and our broad and balanced curriculum enables each child to develop personally, socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, creatively and intellectually to their full potential. We understand that each child is unique and value them as an individual, recognising that children develop and learn at different rates and in different ways.

We follow a play based approach to learning providing children with challenging learning experiences and opportunities for them to explore and take risks. Observations of our children tell us the next steps needed for their learning and we meet these through carefully planned adult led activities.

As well as focus on the three prime areas of the EYFS, Literacy and Maths are core to our teaching. We follow the Letters and Sounds programme in both Nursery and Reception with Reception pupils learning the Phase 2 letter sounds from their second week of school. Through our teaching importance is placed on reading for pleasure as well as the skills needed to learn to read. We work closely with the whole school to ensure that links are planned between the learning in EYFS and the later key stages, ensuring where possible that children are exposed to key vocabulary and concepts they will later revisit in the National Curriculum.
